WElcome to 8th Grade

Welcome back! I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break and are eager to begin a wonderful new year of challenges, hard work, and rewards! This year I hope to provide a fresh and rewarding experience in learning for each and every student. I will do my best to provide curriculum that is challenging, yet interesting and engaging, so that students are not only pushed to achieve their fullest potential, but likewise, enjoy the process of learning.

​Starting the 8th grade is exciting and comes with more expectation and growth. This year 8th graders will immerse themselves in preparation for high school by practicing and strengthening skills they learned in earlier years of middle school while also learning new (and often more complex) skills. In many ways, 8th grade is a year of transition, as students are expected to have mastered the ways of middle school and begin becoming “high-schoolers.” Specifically, 8th graders are expected to be independent thinkers and workers, analyzing and explaining what they learn in both their writing and orally. 8th grade is a time of celebration and excitement for many students as they anticipate high school.

A major goal of middle-school education is to make students responsible for their own learning. Adolescents must be active participants in setting academic goals for themselves, deciding how to accomplish these goals, and assessing their achievements. This year we are doing this through Student-Led Conferences and Personal Learning Plans.

Eighth grade is a time of change for most students. My goal as a classroom teacher is to provide a safe place for students. My hope is that we—teacher, parents, and students—can work together as a team to give each student the best possible year. I will present the necessary tools and guidance for students to be successful, the students must put forth their best effort both at school and at home, and parents will need to encourage and support their students along the way. It is also really important that there is communication between you at home and myself at school.
